Plenty of Options: Swim Mom

Plenty of Options: Swim Mom

In the summertime Swim Mom can often be seen at the beach or near a pool. Here's what we think you might want to wear to feel your most human while sitting in 3-4 inches of kiddie pool water.

Open this email in a browser to see the whole thing, if you can. As the name suggests, there are plenty of options in here! 🙃

Luchita Hurtado, Untitled, 1970

Summer is here and we have received a few requests for swimsuit recommendations. Swim is already a challenging category without throwing pregnancy, postpartum or children into the equation.

If you have or will give birth in the summertime, you may (soon) be familiar with the process of locating a bathing suit for your very newly-lactating postpartum body. Will your bod be in a state of transition forever? Nobody knows. But we do know that bodies in transition are beautiful, too.

Likewise, even if you’re a few months or years into your postpartum mom bod, it can still be a confusing thing to accommodate. Maybe it’s just us, but our bodies have continued to evolve long after “postpartum” is apparently not the applicable term anymore. Not to mention figuring out your family stance on sun protection generally, things that go on your head and cover-ups to cover up your who-knows-what (we think they refer to covering our “boobs” and “butts” but anyway).

So let’s dive in and see what we can do to help you get through this season feeling ready to be near-ish various sources of water. Regardless of your stage, plenty of options for all of the above can be found below. Let’s begin!

Swimwear

J.Crew Scoopneck One-Piece
  • J.Crew Scoopneck One-Piece $98: We’re going to provide a lot of one-piece options because it’s really the least stressful silhouette out there. Remember this swimsuit from 1992? And remember the reissue in 2014? To recall a specific suit and revisit it more than once is our highest form of praise. Here is the bikini equivalent of those 90s vibes from Matteau.

Speedo ProLT Swimsuit
  • Speedo ProLT Swimsuit $38: We also like the straight up Speedo one-piece as well. Is it dorky? Yes, but in a good way and it’s also iconic. It’s the kind of thing you can wear as a non-fashion human or a fashion human because it’s easy and sporty. Pairs well with a swim cap for the lap swimming regimen you committed to back in January.

Nu Swim Harmony One Piece
  • Nu Swim Harmony One Piece $230: Nu Swim was good to both of us in early postpartum (especially in the form of a local sample sale). Beach vacations are hard to navigate when your crotch and/or midsection is in ruins. This brand focuses quite a bit on one-pieces and has a variety of options depending on what suits your current preferences - low cut leg, full coverage bum, wired support in the bosoms. Option for when your boobs need a halter. Or a plunge.

    Upopby Crisscross Swimsuit
  • Upopby Crisscross Swimsuit $31: Here’s a mega practical rec! It has a removable built-in padded bra and some extra support in the mid-section. From Court:

I bought this on a whim newly postpartum with my first when I was feeling uncertain about what my body was doing and didn’t want to invest $$$ in a swimsuit. It offers full butt coverage and the crisscross back adds a little style to a very basic silhouette. Now I wear it to places where there is a chance of my suit getting ruined — high chlorine at kids’ swim class, running through sprinklers, sitting on concrete at the public pool, etc.

    Lido Sette
  • Lido Sette €220: This falls under the category of swimsuits-as-bodysuits which just means you can wear it with pants or shorts or a skirt or pareo or see-through garment. Pool to dinner or ocean to boardwalk arcade or whatever circuit you’re on that involves dipping in and out of water adjacent zones. This suit is like a ribbed tank but for swimming. The ribbed fabric helps to make the desired fit a little easier to achieve and feels more customized to your body.
